Sedgefield-based Filtronic has secured an $8m (£5.9m) follow-on contract with an unnamed US customer to design, develop and build prototype units intended for deployment on satellites.

The award follows an approximately $0.5m development contract announced in June. That work covered the initial development of a high-frequency module for use in a satellite payload. The new award moves the programme from initial development into prototype build.

The company announced a separate $8m contract with the same customer in March to develop high-performance amplifier systems. Filtronic has now announced $16.5m of contracts with the customer since March. The March amplifier award is separate from the June-to-September development sequence.

Chief executive Nat Edington said: “We are delighted to be expanding our role in this programme and look forward to continuing to support our customer as the technology progresses towards deployment.”

The US customer has not been named in any of the company's annoucements. The latest award is for prototype build and does not confirm a volume-production order.

Filtronic completed the move into a new Sedgefield headquarters and manufacturing facility earlier this year. Its wider satellite work, including its relationship with SpaceX, has been covered in previous Review North reporting.

The company expects to complete the new contract during the first half of the financial year ending May 2028 and recognise the related revenue in the financial years ending May 2027 and May 2028.
